When should I water? Watering should be done early morning BEFORE 5 am when the wind is calm and the humidity is low. The only time you should water during the day is when you have new sod or are seeding your lawn. 25% of the water evaporates before it hits the ground. Water longer increase time and less frequently every other day versus every day. When should I plant? Anytime the ground is not frozen. The BEST time to plant is in the spring though. Roots continue to grow thru November and IF there is a warm fall planting all the way up to Thanksgiving is not uncommon. What about sod installation? Sod can be installed up to October 31, the ground cannot be frozen as the roots from the sod need to get into the soil. When and how often should I fertilize? Fertilizing should be done 3 times a year usually first part of April, middle of June and again in October. The more you fertilize the more water you need. Trees and shrubs need only be fertilized once (1) a year and only before August 1. Always use a high quality, slow release granular fertilizer. What type of mulch should I use in my landscape? Use a organic mulch meaning additives such as coloring should be avoided. Do NOT use a fabric under your wood mulch and avoid using rock mulch around flowers and perennials. What do I do about weeds? Use a pre-emergent in the spring BEFORE any weeds appear. NEVER pull a weed you will not get the root system of the weed. After the appearance of weeds use a post emergent weed control.
